Today, I had brunch with a friend at Berners Tavern, which is located inside the trendy London Edition Hotel in Fitzrovia. You'd be hard-pressed to find a restaurant this aesthetically pleasing: gold-framed paintings cover every grey-panelled wall; the ceilings are ornately moulded in the classic English stately-home style; and Easter egg-like chandeliers and an orange-lit cocktail bar add extra sparkle to the glamorous space.
The brunch menu is small but perfect for the kind of person who has a hard time making a decision.(They also have a separate, longer lunch menu, which includes Sunday roast.) I ordered an avocado toast with poached eggs and my friend ordered an eggs royale. The dishes came out with zero flair, which was a surprise given the aesthetics of the restaurant itself, but I appreciated the simplicity. (My dish was also £6 so I really can't complain.) I prefer my avocado to be a bit more chunky, and less guacamole-y, but it was pleasant nevertheless.
All in all, I had a wonderful experience at Berners Tavern, and the prices for the brunch items can't be beat, particularly considering the restaurant's elegance. I'd like to try a more substantial meal here or perhaps throw myself a fancy party (see photos from the 2014 BAFTA After Party). One way or another, I'll be back.
